True—capitalization matters. A calorie (small c), or gram calorie, is the energy needed to raise 1 gram of water by 1°C (~4.184 joules). A Calorie (big C), the unit on nutrition labels, is actually a kilocalorie: 1,000 small calories (~4,184 joules), enough to raise 1 kilogram of water by 1°C. So a snack with 250 Calories contains 250,000 scientific calories.
